Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a legal resident of Rhode Island.
  4. Must be an undergraduate or graduate student.
  5. Must have expressed an interest in public accounting during any of his/her undergraduate/graduate years. The applicant must also, in the opinion of the accounting department faculty, demonstrate the potential to become a valued member of the public accounting profession.
  6. Must obtain an overall academic average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent.

Description: This scholarship is open to U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who reside in Rhode Island and have expressed an interest in public accounting. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Application requirements for the Carl W. Christiansen and Cheryl A. Ruggiero Scholarship Program are:

  • Interview (finalists only)
Additional Information: Please note: The Cheryl A. Ruggiero Scholarship is only open to female applicants. Both male and female applicants may be considered for the Carl W. Christiansen Scholarship. Finalists may be requested to attend a personal interview with a member of the RI Society of CPAs. The recipients will be notified in February. A formal scholarship presentation will take place at the RI Society's Annual Event in April.

Award Amount: The award amount varies annually. In prior years, there were $9,800 in total funds given for the Carl W. Christiansen Scholarship and $1,300 in total funds given for the Cheryl A. Ruggiero Scholarship.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,800.

Applications are available on the Rhode Island Society of Certified Public Accountants (RISCPA) website. In addition to a completed application, each student must submit the following materials: a short (less than one page) typewritten memo illustrating his/her interest in public accounting; a copy of his/her transcript; a letter of recommendation from a member of the accounting faculty at his/her school; and proof of both U.S. citizenship and Rhode Island residency (e.g., naturalization papers, birth certificate, copy of driver's license, state-issued identification card). Completed applications must be mailed to the address provided, and must be received by the deadline date.
