In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a resident of Wisconsin.
  4. Must have completed 120 credit hours of a degree program that qualifies the applicant to sit for the CPA Exam. The student must be entering his/her last year to satisfy the 150-hour requirement and eligible to receive a master's degree in business or a double major/minor to satisfy the 150-hour requirement. The student cannot be a May 2018 graduate who has completed the 150-hour requirement.
  5. Must attend a college or university with an accounting program that qualifies the applicant to sit for the CPA Exam.
  6. Must be a full-time student.
  7. Must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Description: This scholarship is open to U.S. students who are Wisconsin residents entering the last year of a 150-hour accounting program (either resulting in a master's degree or double major/minor). Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: The scholarships are named after former WICPA Executive Director LeRoy C. Schmidt, CPA. Schmidt was executive director from 1990 to 2006. He passionately promoted the accounting profession and was actively involved in the legislative process. Recipients must agree to participate in one of the following activities: speak at a high school; write for 'CPA2b'; become a student member of the Young Professionals Committee; attend a Young Professionals continuing education with social event. The recipients will be announced in April for the upcoming school year with the award payment to be made in August, directly to the student.

Award Amount: Awards are distributed as follows: nine $2,500 scholarships to students to assist in the last year of the 150-hour requirement to apply for a Wisconsin CPA license; and one $5,000 scholarship to assist a student in the last year of a 150-hour program resulting in a master's degree. All scholarships are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $7,500.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in December for a refreshed application deadline date. Applications are available on the WICPA Educational Foundation website. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following materials: a current college transcript (unofficial accepted); a personal statement of no more than two pages that addresses the topics listed on the application; two letters of recommendation, one from an accounting instructor and one from a non-relative; and a resume. Applications must be mailed to the address provided and must be received by the deadline date.
