Number of Awards & Eligibility: Four awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student.
  3. Must demonstrate excellence in computing research ability. Please note: Selections are primarily based on the quality of research projects. Unless a student has completed significant research in the computing field, he/she is not eligible for this award and should not seek nomination.
  4. Must attend a college/university in North America.

Description: This award is for U.S. and international undergraduate students who are studying a computer-related field at a North American university. Selections are primarily based on the quality of research projects. Unless a student has completed significant research in the computing field, they are not eligible for this award and should not seek nomination.

Additional Information: The Computing Research Association Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Researchers is provided annually to undergraduate computer science majors who have engaged in significant computer science research and demonstrate the desire & potential to pursue further academic research opportunities. The awards committee looks for demonstrated excellence of computing research ability. The type of department in which the student is majoring and the area of computing in which the student has demonstrated ability are immaterial. What is important is the quality of the research work done by the student. The awards committee also considers the student's academic record and service to the community. Preference will be given to students entering the senior year of their undergraduate program, as well as students who contribute diverse backgrounds and perspectives to the field of computer science. Awards will be announced by mid December.

Award Amount: $1,500 awarded annually, non-renewable. The recipients will also receive financial assistance from CRA toward their travel to one of the major computing research conferences sponsored by CRA, ACM, the IEEE Computer Society, SIAM, AAAI, or USENIX. CRA will also sponsor a departmental reception for the two winners at their home institutions.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,500.

Applications are available on the Computing Research Association (CRA) website. The student must be nominated by two faculty members and recommended by the chair of his/her home department. A completed nomination package must include the following items in this order: a completed nomination form including all required signatures; a letter of support from one faculty nominators; the nominee's resume, including a list of published works (two page maximum); a one-page description highlighting the student's research work and other achievements; the nominee's transcript of academic record; a verification statement signed by department chair stating that the student is in good standing, eligible for the award, and recommended by the chair; and a personal statement. The original packet and five copies must be received by the CRA no later than the deadline date.
