Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must reside in Aroostook, Maine.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  3. This award is for U.S. students.
  4. Must be a high school senior at the time of application.
  5. Must be planning to major in early childhood education or liberal arts.

Description: Eligible applicants are graduating seniors at Aroostook County high schools who are pursuing a degree in early childhood education (preschool) or Liberal Arts (i.e. majoring in education, art/music, or languages rather than the sciences). Preference is given to students who have successfully completed an alternative high school program. Academic excellence is not a prerequisite, but demonstrated personal growth and pursuit of a post-secondary education are.

Additional Information: Erin Sperrey was a young woman who was just beginning to set goals for herself when her life was cruelly ended. She planned to return to college and study graphic design and architecture. Her legacy will live on in the scholarship that bears her name. The Erin Elizabeth Sperrey Memorial Scholarship supports graduating seniors at Aroostook County high schools who are pursuing a degree in early childhood education or the liberal arts. There is a preference for students who have successfully completed an alternative high school program. Academic excellence is not a prerequisite, but demonstrated personal growth and pursuit of a post-secondary education are.

Award Amount: Award amounts vary based on the funds available, the number of recipients selected, and individual financial need.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications and additional information about this award can be found online at the Maine Community Foundation website using the link provided. To be considered for this award, students must submit a completed application form, as well as the following supporting documents: a personal statement, written as a letter addressed to the scholarship committee, that introduces the applicant and his/her goals; a recent letter of recommendation from a teacher or employer who can speak to the candidate's academic and professional potential; and financial information in the form of a FAFSA documentation such as a Student Aid Report. The Student Aid Report (SAR) is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. Applications and supporting documents must be mailed to the provided address, and must be received no later than the deadline date.
