Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two or more awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Los Angeles, Orange, or Ventura county in California.
  3. Must be an undergraduate student with at least one full year of academic work completed.
  4. Must be planning to major in political or investigative journalism.

Additional Information: Each year, The Society of Professional Journalists Los Angeles awards scholarships to students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. This award is named in honor of Carl Greenberg, a political reporter at the Los Angeles Times, famed for being singled out by Richard Nixon as the only reporter who covered him “fairly.”

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, renewable for up to an additional two years if the student maintains satisfactory academic progress.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,000.

Applications and information about this award are available on the Society of Professional Journalists, Los Angeles Chapter at the address provided above. In addition to a completed application form, students must submit the following items: An essay response to the prompt listed on the application; a current resume; examples of the applicant's journalistic work; and a standard resume detailing the student's work and educational experiences. All applications and supporting documents must be mailed or emailed to the address provided, and received by the deadline date. Incomplete and late applications will not be considered.
