Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must demonstrate journalistic excellence and a strong interest in pursuing journalism as a career. Applicants must be currently taking or planning to take journalism courses and/or pursing journalism as a career.
  3. Must have a sensitivity to Asian American and Pacific Islander issues.
  4. Must be a graduating high school senior OR a current undergraduate or graduate student.
  5. Must be enrolled full time with at least 12 credit units each semester for the upcoming academic year.
  6. Must study at an accredited institution in the United States.

Additional Information: Recipients are selected based on the following criteria: academic achievement, demonstrated journalistic ability, financial need, commitment to the field of journalism and/or sensitivity to Asian American and Pacific Islander issues. Please note: AAJA membership is encouraged for all applicants, and is required for scholarship recipients. Students may apply for AAJA membership online. Student memberships are $25 per year.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications are available on the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) website using the provided link. The applicant must submit four complete, collated sets (one original, three copies) of the following: the completed application; a resume submitted on one single-sided 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper; his/her official school transcripts (may not be sent separately); two letters of recommendation from professionals who are familiar with his/her academic and/or journalism work; a typed, double-spaced essay of 500 words or less addressing the topic listed on the application; and work samples (vary based on major; see below for details). Photojournalism applicants must submit a portfolio containing no more than 10 entries (a picture story is considered one entry). Entries may be black and white ot color prints, slides, clippings, CDs, or URLs. Prints/clippings should be no larger than 8.5" x 11". Complete caption information must be attached securely to the back of each entry. Published and unpublished photographs will be considered. Print journalism applicants must submit three copies of up to four articles on 8.5" x 11" paper. Applicants should not send tearsheets or term papers. Broadcast journalism-radio applicants must send up to three stories (with a total length of less than 10 minutes) all copied onto three CDs. Broadcast journalism-television applicants must send up to three stories (with a total length of less than 10 minutes) copied onto four DVDs. All application materials must be received by the deadline date.
