Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a permanent resident of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or Pennsylvania.
  3. Must have an overall grade point average of 3.2 or higher.
  4. Must major in a communications-related field, such as advertising, broadcasting, communications, journalism, marketing, new media or public relations.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must be a female.
  7. A current high school senior must be attending a high school in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or Pennsylvania. A current college student can attend a college or university in any state as long as she is a permanent resident of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or Pennsylvania.
  8. Must take a sufficient number of credits each semester to qualify for a degree or graduation within the prescribed period.
  9. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.

Description: This award is available for U.S. female high school seniors and/or current college students who are permanent residents of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or Pennsylvania. Students must have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher overall, and major in a communications-related field, such as advertising, broadcasting, communications, journalism, marketing, new media or public relations.

Additional Information: The New York Women in Communications' Foundation, the charitable arm of New York Women in Communications, will award college scholarships to qualified applicants on the basis of academic excellence, need, and involvement in the field of communications. Residents of the tri-state area and Pennsylvania who are focusing on communication studies are eligible to submit applications for scholarships. A student is eligible even if she is attending a school outside New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or Pennsylvania, as long as her home address is in one of these regions. An appointed NYWICI Scholarship Committee will select the winners. Scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of academic record, need, demonstrated leadership, participation in school and community service activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, and unusual personal and/or family circumstances. Finalists will be required to attend an in-person interview in New York City on a date in March to be determined by the Scholarship Committee. Recipients of scholarship awards will be notified no later than March and will be acknowledged on-stage at the Matrix Awards Luncheon in April in New York City. Scholarship recipients must provide confirmation of acceptance into an undergraduate or graduate program no later than May. Scholarship monies will be awarded directly to educational institutions in June.

Award Amount: The amount of each award varies annually. In the past, scholarships have ranged from $2,500 to $10,000. All awards are non-renewable. Past recipients are eligible to reapply.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $6,250.

Applications are available online on the New York Women in Communications, Inc. (NYWICI) website. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also submit the following: a resume or a page that includes school and extracurricular activities (include any work experience, internships, communications-related activities and NYWICI involvement with dates and length of activity), significant achievements, academic awards/honors received, and community service work; a 300- to 500-word personal story addressing the topic listed on the application; two letters of recommendation from a professor, employer and/or adviser (one must be from a professor or adviser); an official transcript from all colleges attended with proof of a qualifying grade point average; and verification of acceptance for the upcoming academic year to an accredited college or university. If the student is unable to obtain his/her transcripts and/or recommendations and the student's school has to send them under separate cover, they must be received by the deadline date. The application and all supporting materials must be submitted online and must be received by the deadline date.
