Number of Awards & Eligibility: Twelve awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a legal resident of one of the following states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Tennessee.
  3. Must have a strong interest in writing.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  5. Must be an undergraduate or graduate student.

Description: This is a writing contest for residents of Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, and North Carolina. To enter, students may submit their work in one of four categories: fiction, poetry, nonfiction or drama. Applicants should review the website for the requirements to enter their specific writing category.

Application requirements for the Porter Fleming Literary Competition are:

  • Manuscript
  • $15 entry fee
Additional Information: All entries must be original, unpublished, and not accepted by any publisher at the time they are entered. Winners will be invited to participate in a special literary program during the 'Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival'. Prizes will be mailed the following week to any winners not in attendance. Past winners are ineligible to enter for three years. Entrants may not resubmit a piece previously entered to the competition.

Award Amount: One first-place award of $1,000, one second-place award of $500, and one third-place award of $250 will be awarded in each of the four categories.All awards are made on an annual basis and are non-renewable. A total of $7,000 will be awarded.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $12,000.

Applications are available on the Morris Museum of Art website. To enter, students may submit their work in one of four categories: fiction, poetry, nonfiction or drama. The applicant must review the website for the specific requirements of the entry category. Pages must conform to the entry guidelines: typed, double-spaced on 8.5 x 11 inch paper, ample margins, and standard type. Faded manuscripts are not acceptable. The entrant's name must not appear on the manuscript itself. Each entry will be assigned a number prior to judging. Three copies of each entry should be submitted. An entry fee of $15 must accompany each entry. Poetry submissions may include up to three poems. Entries must be postmarked by the deadline date. Applicants will be notified (see requirements) when the entry is received.
