Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. *Please note: The number of recipients for this program varies according to the number of students meeting the eligibility requirements in any give year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be an African American student. African American is defined using the federal Equal Employment Opportunity definition of 'all persons having origins in the Black racial groups of Africa.'
  3. Must be a graduate of a Butler or Warren County, Ohio high school.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  5. Must plan to enroll as a full-time student in an accredited U.S. not-for-profit college or university (for-profit colleges/universities and trade schools are not eligible) no later than the beginning of the 2010-2011 academic year.
  6. Must be a high school senior who will graduate in the spring semester following the application deadline.

Description: This award is available to African American seniors planning to graduate in 2014 from a Butler or Warren County, Ohio, high school. Selection is based on both academic and non-academic achievements as well as financial need.

Additional Information: The scholarship is intended for a student with an outstanding high school academic and non-academic achievement record. Final scholarship winners are selected by an independent committee of college professionals selected solely by the Middletown Community Foundation. No employees of AK Steel or members of the AK Steel Foundation are involved in any way with the appointment of the independent selection committee members or of the scholarship winners.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, renewable for three years. Authorized expenses are tuition, academic fees, books, and room & board. The annual renewal of the scholarship is determined by the Middletown Community Foundation. Renewability is based on the recipient maintaining satisfactory academic progress as a full-time student and the submission of an annual student statement. The Middletown Community Foundation will issue an annual scholarship check in August made payable to the student's college or university, but mailed directly to the student. The student is responsible for delivering the check to the appropriate college or university office for deposit, and for maintaining all records of receipt.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available on the Middleton Community Foundation (MCF) website. The student must have his/her counselor complete the 'Counselor Evaluation' section of the application. The student must also send a high school records release permission form (included in the application) to his/her high school requesting that the high school send a transcript directly to the MCF. The original completed and signed application must be submitted online by the deadline date.
