Number of Awards & Eligibility: Five awards offered annually, one in each of the five postal regions listed on the application.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be the child or grandchild, including stepchild or legally adopted child, of an active member, Retirees Department member, or deceased member of the American Postal Workers Union. The sponsor must be a full dues-paying member or retirees member [as defined in the APWU National Constitution and Bylaws, reference Article 3, Section 1, Section 4(d)] in good standing or must have been a member immediately preceding death.
  3. Must be interested in a program of study leading to a trade, technical, industrial or vocational occupation. Eligible occupations can include: culinary, medical or dental assistant, electrician, real estate, auto mechanic, certified IT-computer education, massage therapy, or cosmetology.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  5. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

Description: U.S. citizens who are high school seniors planning to pursue a postsecondary occupational education (vocational/technical) program are eligible for this award. Students must be the child or grandchild, including stepchild or legally adopted child, of an active member, Retirees Department member, or deceased member of the American Postal Workers Union.

Additional Information: Please note: Students may apply for either this scholarship or the E.C. Hallbeck Scholarship offered by APWU, but not both. In making scholarship selections, the Scholarship Selection Committee places primary emphasis upon knowledge and understanding of the importance of unions as displayed in the essay. Decisions of the Selection Committee will be final. Winners will receive notice by July 1. The following individuals are excluded from consideration for this scholarship: children/grandchildren of all elected national officers; applicants from other postal unions (NALC, NRLCA, NMPHU); students whose sponsors are currently postal managers. Please note: The scholarship will be discontinued for a recipient whose sponsor becomes a postal manager.

Award Amount: Up to $1,000 annually, renewable for two consecutive years or until completion of the course of study, with the total not exceeding $3,000.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

Applications are available on the American Postal Workers Union (APWU) website. In addition to the completed application, each student must submit the following materials: a 350-500 word essay on one of the three topics listed on the application; an official transcript (in a sealed envelope or emailed by the high school to the address provided); and a completed 'Teacher or Community Leader Assessment' form (in a sealed envelope or emailed by the assessor to the address provided). Please note: If the APWU member under whose eligibility the student is applying is deceased, the student must provide proof of his/her sponsor's membership in APWU. All application materials must be submitted in one envelope to the address provided and must be received by the deadline date.
