Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. *Please note: The number of recipients for this program varies according to the number of students meeting the eligibility requirements in any given year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a Latino and demonstrate an involvement and commitment to serve in the Latino community.
  3. Must be a full-time student.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  5. Must be a first-, second-, or third-year law student in the upcoming academic year to apply.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for Hispanic students who will be enrolled full time in a law program during the upcoming school year. Selection will be made by considering involvement in and commitment to serve the Hispanic community through the legal profession academics professional achievements and financial need.

Additional Information: Scholarships will be awarded to students based upon three primary factors: demonstrated involvement in and commitment to serving the Latino community through the legal profession; academic and professional achievement; and financial need. *Please Note: MALDEF has serious reservations about the predictive ability of LSAT scores; therefore, while applicants may opt to provide the LSDAS Report, MALDEF will not weigh the LSAT score heavily in choosing scholarship recipients.

Award Amount: Up to $7,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $7,000.

Applications are available on the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) website. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following materials: a current resume that includes information on education, community, activities, work experience, interests, etc.; a typed, double-spaced, personal statement of 750 words or less addressing the topics listed on the application; an official undergraduate transcript or photocopy of an official transcript; an official law school transcript or photocopy, if he/she has completed his/her first year; two letters of recommendation, one from a person able to authenticate his/her involvement in the Latino community, and the other from a college and/or law school professor; and a LSDAS report with his/her LSAT score (optional). Please note: The student must have his/her current or intended school complete the financial need statement form (available as part of the application). The school's financial aid office must send the form directly to MALDEF by the application deadline date. All application materials must be received by mail or email no later than the deadline date. Any application materials submitted via fax will not be accepted. Any materials received after the deadline date will not be accepted.
