Hon. Mary Fitzgerald Aspell Social Justice Scholarship

Judge Mary Fitzgerald Aspell was the second woman to appointed a Superior Court Judge in the State of Connecticut, and the mother of Attorney James F. Aspell. Judge Aspell was a trailblazer for women in the legal profession and a strong believer in the role that attorneys play in helping the less fortunate in society. . As a leading workers compensation law firm in Connecticut , James F. Aspell, P.C. is committed to making social justice a cornerstone of our practice’s values. Our goal to ensure that all people have access to the same opportunities for education, self-improvement, and civic involvement, regardless of their socioeconomic circumstances. Our nation has a long-standing legacy of social justice—from the fight for women’s suffrage, to the civil rights movement, to contemporary efforts to embrace all varieties of race, creed, and sexuality—but there is still much work to be done. Until everyone can benefit from the same rights, opportunities, and basic services, there will always be the need for ambitious and talented people to make progress on behalf of others who are less fortunate. Federal Justice Reform Scholarship

As a dedicated Maryland criminal defense attorney, Kush Arora focuses his practice on representing individuals who have been accused of a variety of offenses, from misdemeanors to felonies. The work of a criminal defense attorney is as tough as it is important. That is because the presumption of innocence, what many of us know as the right to be considered innocent until proven otherwise, is the cornerstone of our justice system. As such, it requires sound legal counsel for all those accused. Attorney Arora takes his role and responsibilities seriously within the Maryland criminal justice system. He also values the need for students to recognize whether they believe the laws that govern are just or unjust, and why. These traits are valuable in all citizens, not just criminal justice professionals. Attorney Arora is dedicated to providing financial support and academic recognition to those who will pursue or support reasoned legal reform in the future. Whether those goals are met with a law degree and practice, by pursuing a degree in another field that works within the criminal justice system, or through civic participation, Attorney Arora understands that the success of the criminal justice system depends on the success of the bright young individuals who are pursuing their academic dreams. To help students achieve their goals and further bolster the system he so proudly serves, Attorney Arora has established the Kush Arora Federal Justice Reform Scholarship. This scholarship will award $500 to a deserving student who has demonstrated a thoughtful, well-reasoned view of whether certain laws and criminal justice policies are just or unjust.

Parole Reform Scholarship

The experience of individuals who have served time in jail for a crime extends beyond their time behind bars, as they encounter unique challenges upon their release. In addition to the practical obstacles faced by individuals after serving time, they often encounter harsh judgment and societal stigma, making it even more challenging to start over. This judgment can lead to limited employment prospects, social exclusion, and difficulties securing housing. In our society, fostering understanding, compassion, and second chances is crucial for successfully reintegrating individuals who have served time in jail. By promoting awareness and education, challenging preconceived notions, and advocating for policies that facilitate reintegration, we can create an environment where these individuals are given a fair chance to rebuild their lives and make positive contributions to our community. That said, we are proud to announce our new scholarship, the Parole Reform Scholarship. We want to hear how our community feels about our current justice/ intake system and ways it could be improved. For this scholarship, students are asked to reflect on the importance of understanding and compassion in supporting individuals who have been incarcerated. Discuss how promoting awareness and education about the challenges they face can break down societal barriers and stereotypes. Share your thoughts on how challenging preconceived notions can lead to a more inclusive and supportive society for those seeking to rebuild their lives after serving time. This $1,000 scholarship award will be given to one eligible student. The deadline to apply is November 30, 2023. Continue reading below for details on the application process.
