Number of Awards & Eligibility: Four awards offered annually. Two awards will be offered each season.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must plan to enroll at the Culinary Institute of America in New York.
  3. Must have a demonstrated interest in food writing.
  4. Must be a graduating high school senior or older to apply for this freshman year award.

Description: Students applying as freshmen to the Culinary Institute of America in New York who have a demonstrated interest in food writing are eligible for this award.

Application requirements for the M.F.K. Fisher Scholarship are:

  • Essay
  • Recommendation letter
  • Application form
Additional Information: This scholarship is open to both men and women who have a demonstrated interest in food writing. Students at all phases of the inquiry and application process may apply.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $8,000.

Scholarship applications are available online from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) website. Each applicant must be planning to apply or have already applied for admission to the CIA. The student must take an assessment test prior to submitting his/her admission application; this test is available online on the CIA website. In addition to a completed application for admission, the student must submit a letter of recommendation from an employer or guidance counselor. Please note: All students must have a minimum of six months of foodservice experience at time of application for admission. In addition to the completed scholarship application, each student must submit a personal essay of 500 to 700 words about a food memory such as his/her first cooking experience, a family holiday food tradition, or a childhood remembrance of food. All applications must be received by the deadline date.
