Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. In previous years, seven scholarships have been awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Consideration will be given to students with a grade point average of 3.2 to 3.49 under special circumstances.
  4. Must be enrolled in one of the following Bay Area public universities: California State University, East Bay; San Francisco State University; San Jose State University; Sonoma State University or University of California, Berkeley.
  5. Must major in one of the following fields: social sciences, human services, health-related fields and/or public service.
  6. Must be an upper division student who has attended the school for one academic year or more, with 24 units that were attained at the present university

Description: This award is available for current juniors and seniors attending one of the following universities: California State University, East Bay; San Francisco State University; San Jose State University; Sonoma State University or University of California, Berkeley. The applicant must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and be majoring in social sciences, human services, health-related fields or public service.

Application requirements for the New Leader Scholarship are:

Additional Information: Applicants must demonstrate financial need. The fund is especially designed to provide aid to students who come from financially and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds and demonstrate leadership capacities. Preference and priority are given to recent immigrants and students of color. Students should be planning to pursue advanced education in the social sciences, human services, health-related fields or public service and be able to demonstrate a commitment to serving others. Students will be expected to remain connected to The New Leader Scholarship Fund and awardees' network in order to contribute to the goals of the fund. If selected as an eligible scholarship candidate, the student is required to attend a mandatory interview with the scholarship committee.

Award Amount: Up to $8,000 annually, renewable for up to three additional years if the student maintains his/her grade point average, continues to demonstrate financial need, and remains enrolled in an undergraduate and/or graduate program with satisfactory progress.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $8,000.

Applications are available on the New Leader Scholarship website. In addition to the completed application, the following materials must be submitted: an official transcript; two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a faculty member in the student's area of interest; and an essay of 700 words or less addressing the topic listed on the application. The completed application and supporting materials must be postmarked by the deadline date and sent to the address provided.
