Number of Awards & Eligibility: This provider offers two awards annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  4. Must plan to enroll or be enrolled full time.
  5. Must be majoring in or planning to major in the field of metallurgy.
  6. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who are majoring in the field of metallurgy. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: The Benjamin F. Fairless Scholarship was established in 1954 through a generous grant from the United States Steel Corporation. The award is provided annually in memory of its longtime Chairman of the Board, Benjamin F. Fairless and the scholarship seeks to reward those students who share his passion for technology and innovation in the steel industry. AIST Foundation Scholarship awards are intended to attract talented and dedicated students and to encourage them to pursue careers within the iron and steel industry. The AIST Foundation Board of Trustees administers the scholarships. Please note: Students do not have to be AIST members or be dependents of AIST members to apply for this award. The AIST Foundation Scholarship recipients will be announced in December.

Award Amount: Up to $3,000 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year. Scholarship recipients will also receive a one-year Material Advantage membership. Through the Material Advantage program, students are members of the following organizations serving the materials science and engineering community: American Ceramic Society (ACerS), Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST), ASM International, and The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS).  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $6,000.

Applications are available online from the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST) website and are accepted between August 1 and November 30. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a current resume with work experience and any extracurricular activities, noting any leadership positions; an essay of two pages or less addressing his/her professional goals, and explaining why he/she is interested in a career in the steel industry and how his/her skills could be applied to enhance the industry; three letters of recommendation which address academic status, leadership potential, and career commitment (one each from his/her high school counselor or college academic adviser, a professor or high school teacher, and an external source, preferably a previous employer); and a current academic transcript. The application and all supporting materials must be submitted online and received by the deadline date.
