Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a college senior or graduate student at the time of application.
  2. This award is for U.S. and international students.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  4. Must demonstrate a commitment to pursuing a career in the steel industry.
  5. Must be enrolled in or planning to enroll in a graduate program in the U.S. or Canada.
  6. Must major in materials science, metallurgical, electrical, mechanical, industrial, chemical, environmental, or computer engineering.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for graduate students pursuing a degree in materials science, metallurgical, electrical, mechanical, industrial, chemical, environmental, and computer engineering majors. Applicants must be accepted to or enrolled in a graduate level program, and must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher at the time of application.

Additional Information: Administered by the AIST Foundation, this scholarship was established by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME) in 1967 to honor Henry DeWitt Smith’s contributions to the mining industry.  This scholarship assists worthy students in the pursuit of their graduate education in engineering in the United States or Canada.

Award Amount: $6,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $6,000.

Applications are available online from the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a current resume with work experience and any extracurricular activities, noting any leadership positions; an essay of two pages or less addressing his/her professional goals, and explaining why he/she is interested in a career in the steel industry and how his/her skills could be applied to enhance the industry; three letters of recommendation which address academic status, leadership potential, and career commitment (one each from his/her high school counselor or college academic adviser, a professor or high school teacher, and an external source, preferably a previous employer); and a current academic transcript. The application and all supporting materials must be submitted online and must be received by the deadline date.
