Number of Awards & Eligibility: 30 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be eligible for employment at a steel company in the country he/she is attending school in during the summer following application. Satisfying the employment criteria in the appropriate country is the responsibility of the applicant. Applicants unable to accept the summer internship will not be considered.
  3. Must be enrolled full time.
  4. Must be studying metallurgy or materials science with plans for a career in the iron and steel industry.
  5. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  6. Must be enrolled in an accredited North American university for the upcoming academic year at the junior level.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. college juniors who are studying metallurgy or materials science with plans for a career in the iron and steel industry, and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Students must be eligible for employment at a steel company in the country in which they are attending school.

Additional Information: Applicants for the Steel Internship and Premier Internship Scholarships require a commitment to a paid summer internship at a North American steel producing company or industry supplier. Students applying for these awards must be eligible for employment at a steel company in the country he/she is in school during the summer. Satisfying the employment criteria in the appropriate country is the responsibility of the applicant. Scholarship awardees will be announced in December.

Award Amount: Students completing an internship will be eligible for $12,000 annually and may be invited to renew for an additional year. 29 awards at $6,000 per year and 1 at $12,000.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $186,000.

Applications are available online from the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a current resume with work experience and any extracurricular activities, noting any leadership positions; an essay of two pages or less addressing his/her professional goals, and explaining why he/she is interested in a career in the steel industry and how his/her skills could be applied to enhance the industry; a minimum of two letters of recommendation from professors or academic advisers who are familiar with his/her work (an additional letter from an employer is optional but recommended if the student has relevant industry work experience); a current academic transcript; and a list of the source and amounts of any other grants and scholarships being applied to his/her tuition in the upcoming academic year. The application and all additional documents must be submitted online and must be received by the deadline date.
