Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually and is dependent on funding. Last year, nine fellowships were awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.25 or higher.
  4. Must enroll full time.
  5. Must be pursuing a related course of study in the atmospheric, oceanic, or hydrologic sciences over a full academic year. Prospective candidates from the fields of atmospheric sciences, chemistry, computer sciences, engineering, environmental sciences, hydrology, mathematics, oceanography, and physics are encouraged to apply.
  6. Must be entering his/her first year of graduate study in the upcoming fall semester.

Description: U.S. students entering their first year of graduate study in the upcoming fall semester are eligible for this award. Students must have a grade point average of 3.25 or higher and pursue a degree in the atmospheric, oceanic, hydrologic, or related sciences.

Application requirements for the AMS Graduate Fellowship are:

Additional Information: The Society encourages applications from women, minorities, and disabled students, traditionally underrepresented in the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences. The evaluation of applicants will be based on the applicant's performance as an undergraduate student, including academic records, recommendations, and Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) scores. Selection will be made by the AMS Executive Committee. The AMS does not prepare written evaluations of either successful or unsuccessful candidates.

Award Amount: A $25,000 stipend will be presented to each fellowship recipient for a nine-month period in the upcoming academic year. In addition, fellowship recipients will receive partial travel support to attend the AMS Annual Meeting. Awards are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $25,000.

Applications are available online from the American Meteorological Society (AMS) website starting on September 1st.As part of the application, the student must answer three short essay questions (100 to 200 words each). In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following materials: three written references; official transcripts; and official GRE score reports. The AMS GRE institution code is 3819.Completed applications and written references will be accepted via email or postal mail. GRE scores and official transcripts must be submitted via postal mail.All applications must be received online by the deadline date.
