Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. resident.
  3. Must pursue an engineering or related science degree through an ABET-accredited program. A listing of ABET-accredited programs is available online at main.abet.org/aps/Accreditedprogramsearch.aspx.
  4. Must meet the following grade point average requirements: 3.0 or higher if transferring from a two- or four-year college/university; 3.25 or higher if a high school senior; 3.5 or higher if transferring from a vocational/technical school.
  5. Must meet one of the following standardized test score requirements: an SAT I math score of 600 or higher and critical reading score of 550 or higher; OR an ACT composite score of 27 or higher.
  6. Must be a high school senior OR a current undergraduate student who is transferring from a vocational/technical school or a two- or four-year college/university.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: U.S. high school seniors or college transfer students pursuing an engineering degree at an ABET-accredited college or university are eligible for this award. Students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and a combined SAT score of 1220 or higher (600 on math, 550 on verbal) OR an ACT score of 27 or higher.

Additional Information: SAE and The Maintenance Council of American Trucking Associations have established this technical education scholarship to honor the leadership of Donald D. Dawson. From his position as Vice President of Maintenance with Roadway Express, Mr. Dawson worked through SAE and TMC to merge the goals of truck equipment users and manufacturers. This scholarship is intended to encourage the ideal of Mr. Dawson's respected technical competence in transport management.

Award Amount: $1,500 annually, renewable for three additional years. To renew, the student must submit a renewal form by May 30 annually.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,500.

Applications are available online from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) website by clicking on the "Freshman Year of College Scholarships" link. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following materials: a copy of his/her SAT/ACT scores if not included on his/her transcript (copy printed from website acceptable); and official high school/college transcripts. Application materials must be submitted online by the deadline.
