Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a full-time student.
  2. Must demonstrate an interest in pursuing an engineering career in the vertical flight industry.
  3. Must be enrolled as an undergraduate, master's, or Ph.D. student. The student must be in at least the second semester of an undergraduate program. Please note: Students must be enrolled for the entire academic year following award of the scholarship.
  4. This award is for international and U.S. students.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: International and U.S. undergraduate or graduate students enrolled full time in an accredited school of engineering are eligible for this award. Students must have a demonstrated interest in the vertical flight industry.

Application requirements for the Vertical Flight Foundation Engineering Scholarship are:

  • Recommendation letter
  • Application form
  • Personal statement
  • Official Transcript
  • Resume
Additional Information: The student does not have to be a member of the American Helicopter Society to apply for this award. Applications will be reviewed by the scholarship committee and are weighted as follows: experience (work history, research, paper publications), 35 percent; narrative, 25 percent; letter(s) of reference, 20 percent; academics, 10 percent; extracurricular activities, 10 percent. The foundation will award several scholarships annually, unless there are no qualified applicants. Scholarship recipients will be notified by the Vertical Flight Foundation by April 15.

Award Amount: $1,000 to $5,000 annually, non-renewable. Please note: Students are eligible to receive this scholarship once as an undergraduate student, once as a master's degree student, and once as a Ph.D. student. Students must reapply.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.

Applications are available on the American Helicopter Society Flight Foundation (AHSFF) website. Each applicant is advised to read the scholarship guidelines carefully prior to submitting an application. In addition to the completed application, each student must submit a narrative on the topics listed within the application, an official grade transcript (including the most recent set of grades issued), a resume, and an academic endorsement from a professor or dean at his/her school. Please note: The academic endorsement must follow the guidelines set forth on the AHSFF website. The completed application and supporting documents may be submitted electronically or via postal mail to the addresses provided. Applications must be received or postmarked by midnight on the deadline date.
