Number of Awards & Eligibility: The scholarship committee will determine the number of scholarships/grants to be awarded each year. Last year, eight scholarships were given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be 18 years of age or older at time of application.
  3. Must be a U.S. or Norwegian citizen.
  4. Applicants who are U.S. citizens must demonstrate an interest in furthering their study of Norwegian heritage through arts, crafts, literature, history, music, folklore, etc.
  5. Applicants who are Norwegian citizens must demonstrate an interest in furthering their study of American heritage through arts, crafts, literature, history, music, folklore, etc.
  6. Must be a high school graduate or current undergraduate or graduate student at time of application.

Additional Information: King Olav V of Norway gave his permission to the Sons of Norway Foundation to use his name in establishing a fund to be known as the "King Olav V Norwegian-American Heritage Fund". Its purpose is to fund activities in which the American and Norwegian heritages are explored, studied and shared by qualified scholarship recipients. Endowment money has been raised by selling medallions and securing gifts from Sons of Norway members. Award decisions are based upon the following criteria: essay; academic potential/grade transcripts; benefit to Sons of Norway and wider Norwegian/American community; involvement in school and community activities; letters of recommendation; and financial need. Final selection of the scholarship winners will be made by a scholarship committee appointed by the President of the Sons of Norway Foundation. Notification of the award will be made within 10 weeks of deadline.

Award Amount: $1,000 to $1,500 annually, non-renewable. Checks will be made payable jointly to each recipient and his/her institution, and must be endorsed by both. Students may reapply, but may receive no more than two scholarships within a five-year period.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,250.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in November for a refreshed application deadline date.Applications will be available online from the Sons of Norway Foundation website.Each student must provide an essay of 500 words or less in the online application summarizing how this scholarship will help him/her achieve his/her educational dreams and further his/her career goals and how he/she will share this experience with the Sons of Norway or community-wide audiences. If the student is using this scholarship for a vocational training program, he/she should also state how this will help advance him/her in his/her particular field or add to his/her list of skills.Each student must also provide contact information for two people who will submit letters of recommendation on his/her behalf. If the student is using this scholarship for a vocational training program, one of the letters must be from his/her employer. The letters of recommendation must be submitted via email to scholarship@sofn.com; the student's name and scholarship for which he/she is applying must appear in the subject line.Each student must also submit an official copy of his/her latest high school or college transcript.All application components must be submitted by the deadline date.
