Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually. Each year, the number of scholarships awarded is based upon the donations made by the membership of the federation specifically to the ICF Scholarship Fund.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must major in Italian studies.
  3. Must be Catholic.
  4. Must be of Italian descent OR the child or grandchild of a current member of the Italian Catholic Federation.
  5. Must have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher.
  6. Must live within the Catholic dioceses of California, Nevada, Illinois or Arizona. For a complete list of participating branches, visit www.icf.org/branches.html
  7. Must be a college sophomore or junior at time of application.
  8. Must be a U.S. citizen.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for U.S. third or fourth year college students who live within the Catholic dioceses of California, Nevada, Illinois or Arizona. Students must be Catholic, be of Italian descent, major in Italian studies, and have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher.

Additional Information: To honor Mario Cugia, past president and life member of the Italian Catholic Federation Central Council, an Italian studies scholarship program was created. Supplementing the federation's scholarship program for lower-division students, the Mario Cugia Scholarship has been established to encourage and support students who major in Italian studies. Applicants will be evaluated on scholastic achievement, financial need, leadership roles, faculty recommendations and extracurricular activities. Scholarship winners will be notified by September 1.

Award Amount: $600 for college juniors, and $1,000 for college seniors. Both awards are offered annually and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $800.

Applications are available on the Italian Catholic Federation (ICF) website by clicking on the 'Italian Language Scholarship Application' link. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also submit the following: a transcript; a letter of recommendation from a qualified teacher, administrator or counselor attesting to the his/her grade point average; and a personal letter of approximately 150 words addressing the topic listed on the application. The applicant's completed application packet must be mailed to the Italian Catholic Federation, marked to the attention of the scholarship committee, by the deadline.
