Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent).
  3. Must major or minor in Italian language, Italian studies, Italian American studies or a related field.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  5. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate year award.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for U.S. undergraduate and/or graduate students who are majoring or minoring in Italian language, Italian studies, Italian American studies or a related field. Students must also have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Additional Information: A small percentage of the total number of scholarships the NIAF grants each year take the financial need of an applicant into account along with academic merit as criteria for selection. Please note: This scholarship program is extremely competitive and all applications undergo a rigorous evaluation process. The odds of being awarded a scholarship depend heavily upon the number of applications received. Last year, the NIAF received nearly 5,000 scholarship applications.

Award Amount: Scholarship awards range from $2,500 to $12,000 annually, non-renewable. Scholarship applicants and winners can and are encouraged to re-apply in subsequent years. Each scholarship award can only cover tuition and university-provided room and board. Scholarship monies not used during one academic year are not transferable to the following academic year. To be eligible to receive payment, a NIAF scholar must: submit a written acceptance of the scholarship award; submit letter(s) of appreciation to NIAF-designated scholarship financial contributor(s); submit a color photograph for publication; and sign a written statement pledging that upon completion of the academic year, he/she will submit a typed narrative of approximately 500 words for publication. The narrative must briefly describe the benefits of the NIAF Scholarship.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $12,000.

Online applications are available on the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) website. To obtain an application, the applicant must follow the steps listed on the website. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also submit an official transcript and an evaluation form completed by a teacher. The applicant's teacher must submit the evaluation form online, using the applicant's assigned application ID. The applicant also has the option to submit the FAFSA. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The applicant must follow the directions listed on the online status page concerning how and where to send both the official transcript and the FAFSA. Transcripts and the FAFSA should be postmarked by the deadline date. Applications are due by the deadline.
