Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be pursuing a career in English- or Spanish-language print, photo, broadcast or online journalism.
  3. Must be Hispanic.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  5. Must be a high school senior, college undergraduate or first-year graduate student.
  6. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for U.S. high school seniors or older students who are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate course of study. Students must be pursuing a career in English- or Spanish-language print, photo, broadcast or online journalism, be Hispanic, and have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

Additional Information: Scholarship recipients will be selected based on academic excellence, a demonstrated interest in pursuing a journalism career, and financial need.

Award Amount: $1,000 to $2,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Online applications are available on the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) website. To start the application process, each student must set up an account with a username and password. All applicants must be student members of NAHJ. To become a member, please visit the membership application page and join online with a credit card or download the membership form and mail it to NAHJ with a check. In addition to the completed application, each student must attach the following to his/her online application: unofficial transcripts from each institution attended; a resume of no more than one page listing his/her educational background, work history, awards, journalism-related internships, other scholarships, language proficiency and any work done for his/her school or community newspaper, radio and/or television; two reference letters in two separately sealed envelopes from people who are familiar with his/her academic and/or journalism work; up to three samples of his/her best work including print, television, radio or photojournalism (see specific guidelines on the NAHJ website); a 1,000-word autobiography in the third person in the form of a news story (see specific guidelines on the NAHJ website); and a copy of his/her W-2 form and the W-2 of anyone who claims him/her as a dependent. Supporting documents not available in electronic format must be scanned and attached to the application. All online applications must be submitted by the deadline date.
