Number of Awards & Eligibility: Five awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a member of the Section of Public Contract Law of the American Bar Association (ABA).
  3. Must be a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or a Latin Legum Magister (L.L.M.) degree candidate attending law schools within the United States and its possessions OR a lawyer who is under 36 years of age or has been admitted to the bar for no more than five years as of Sept. 30, 2010.

Description: This award is for students who are seeking a J.D. degree and attending law schools within the United States and its possessions, as well as lawyers under the age of 36 years (or admitted to practice less than five years as of Sept. 30), and candidates for an L.L.M. degree attending law schools within the United States and its possessions.

Additional Information: Papers prepared for law school credit are eligible for entry in the competition, provided the work is original and the editing and citation work have been done by the author. Joint papers are not acceptable. Articles prepared for law review, or publication elsewhere, are eligible for the competition provided they are not published prior to Jan. 15, and provided that the author certifies that all work submitted is his/her work product, without substantial editing from others. The competition will be conducted in two divisions. Each division will be judged separately, and separate prizes will be awarded to the winners of each division. Division I is open to candidates for a J.D. degree attending law schools within the United States and its possessions. Division II is open to lawyers under the age of 36 years or admitted to practice less than five years as of Sept. 30, and candidates for an L.L.M. degree attending law schools within the United States and its possessions. The judges may withhold some or all of the awards if the submissions are not of notable quality. In the event of a tie, the award will be shared.

Award Amount: Two first-place awards (one each in Division I and II) of $5,000, two second-place awards (one each in Division I and II) of $2,500, and one third-place award of $1,000 (given in Division I). All awards are made on an annual basis and are non-renewable. Winning entries will be considered for publication in the Public Contract Law Journal.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,200.

This is a writing competition. For more information regarding the competition, students should visit the Public Contract Law Journal website or write to Karen Manos using the contact information provided. To enter, the applicant must submit a paper addressing a topical issue of interest to the public contract and grant law community. Papers must be double-spaced (including cited material and footnotes), typed in 12 point font, and should not exceed 40 to 45 pages of 8.5" by 11" text. Papers should conform to the Harvard Bluebook citation style and the Public Contract Law Journal Style Guide. The student must also submit a title page with his/her paper that includes the following information: title; author's name; American Bar Association (ABA) membership number; law school attending and author's year in school, if applicable; date submitted for academic credit or law review publication, if applicable; and the author's permanent and temporary addresses and telephone numbers. All entries must be submitted by email no later than the deadline date.
