Number of Awards & Eligibility: 44 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be attending law school or have been accepted to law school for the upcoming academic year.
  3. Must attend or plan to attend an ABA-accredited law school.
  4. Must be a bona fide resident of Hudson County, New Jersey.

Description: These scholarships are available for Hudson County (NJ) residents who are attending or have been accepted to law school. Students must demonstrate financial need and account for appropriate academic standards.

Application requirements for the HCBF Scholarship Program are:

  • Application form
  • Official Transcript
  • Personal statement
  • Recommendation letters (2)
  • Residency proof
  • Fin. aid letter
  • Tax return
Additional Information: There are 44 named scholarships included in this program, funded by esteemed members and families of the Hudson County legal community. A complete listing of the named awards is available from the HCBF. All applicants must demonstrate financial need and must account for appropriate academic standards.

Award Amount: The award amount varies. In the past, awards have ranged from $2,000 to $2,500. Awards are non-renewable, but students may reapply.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,250.

Applications are available online on the Hudson County Bar Foundation (HCBF) website. Applications must be typed. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: proof of Hudson County (NJ) residency (i.e., driver's license, tax bill, utility bill, etc.); his/her most recent official law school and undergraduate transcript if a first-year law student; a typed, double-spaced personal statement of no more than two pages addressing the topics listed on the application; a financial aid notice from his/her school indicating the financial aid amount awarded to him/her for the academic year, or a letter indicating that he/she is not eligible to receive financial aid; a copy of his/her most recent federal 1040 tax return (and his/her spouse's tax return if filed separately), or an explanation if he/she did not file a tax return; and two letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes addressing his/her academic achievements, professional skills, and any public interest/community work performed (cannot be from family members). The application and all supporting documentation must be mailed to the address provided and must be postmarked by the deadline date.
