Number of Awards & Eligibility: Six awards offered annually, three for each age division.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be African American or Hispanic.
  3. Must play violin or another classical stringed instrument.
  4. Must be 26 years of age or younger at the time of the semifinal competition.

Description: This competition is open to African-American and Hispanic students who play violin, viola, cello or double bass. Applicants must be 26 years of age or younger at the time of the competition.

Additional Information: Eighteen semi-finalists will be selected from the online auditions. All semi-finalists will have access to educational and professional development guidance and events for the duration of the competition. To maximize these benefits, all semi-finalists are required to attend all competition events, including workshops and masterclasses. Sphinx will provide all semi-finalists with the services of a collaborative pianist for one rehearsal and the live semi-final round of the competition. All semi-finalists must be prepared to perform - from memory - all repertoire included on the repertoire list that corresponds to the appropriate age division and instrument. Additional information regarding the semi-final and final rounds of the competition will be provided to all semi-finalists at the time of selection. In addition to professional musical guidance, Sphinx will provide accommodations and meals to all semi-finalists during the competition. Special hotel rates are available for parents, teachers, and other guests of the competition. Semi-finalists are responsible for their own travel to and from the Sphinx Competition.

Award Amount: $50,000 for the first place in the senior division; $20,000 for second place; and $10,000 for third place. Students in the junior division may be awarded up to $10,000 for first place; $5,000 for second place; and $3,000 for third place. All winners will be invited to perform with the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra. All awards are provided once and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $16,333.

To apply for this award, students must submit a video entry online. Details about the audition requirements vary depending on the applicant's division, and more information can be obtained at https://sphinx.myreviewroom.com/ In addition to the video audition, applicants must also submit a current biography, a repetoire, and a high resolution headshot. The required application materials and a registration fee of $35 must be submitted by the deadline date.
