Number of Awards & Eligibility: Varies, approximately 2,000 awards were disbursed last year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Texas.
  3. Must be employed as a paid firefighter by a political subdivision of the state of Texas.
  4. Must attend a public college or university in Texas.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must be enrolled in courses offered as part of a fire science curriculum. Such courses may include those related to fire service, emergency medicine, emergency management, and public administration. The student should consult his/her institution and/or the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for more specific details.

Description: This award is available for Texas resident firefighters who are enrolled in courses offered as part of a fire science curriculum. Applicants must be enrolled in a public Texas college or university.

Additional Information: The purpose of this program is to encourage persons employed as firefighters to take college courses designed to help them in their work. The applicant must enroll in classes for which the college receives tax support (i.e., a course that does not depend solely on student tuition and fees to cover its costs).

Award Amount: Exemption from the payment of tuition and laboratory fees for courses offered as part of a fire science curriculum. To receive continuation awards, a firefighter (paid or volunteer) must meet satisfactofy academic progress, as determined by the institution.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $928.
