Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 500 or more Scholars will be selected every year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen.
  3. Must be enrolled at least half-time.
  4. Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a teacher education program or pursuing additional course work needed to gain Illinois State Board of Education approval to teach in an approved specialized teacher shortage program.
  5. Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment at an eligible Illinois public or private university or college.
  6. Must be a resident of Illinois.
  7. Must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  8. Must be a high school senior, college freshman, or college sophomore at the time of application.
  9. Must have an ACT score of 22 or higher or an SAT score of 1110 or higher.

Description: The Golden Apple Scholars Program is available for Illinois residents who have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and are enrolled or planning to enroll in a Teacher Education Program. Applicants must agree to teach in an approved, high-need school.

Additional Information: The Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois program is for academically talented and financially needy students who are pursuing a teacher shortage discipline and/or making a commitment to teach at a hard-to-staff school. A listing of Illinois colleges approved to participate in this program is available online at the ISAC website. Awards are provided as forgivable loans and full repayment requires that the student teach for five years at a difficult-to-staff school. Each year of employment will reduce the forgivable loan by 20%. Students who receive funding but do not teach at an eligible school upon graduation (or within seven years of graduation) will be required to pay back all disbursed funds.

Award Amount: Up to $5,750 annually for individuals enrolled and seeking initial certification as a teacher. Awards are provided as forgivable loans and applicants must agree to teach in a hard-to-staff school to receive loan forgiveness. Each year of teaching employment at such a designated school will reduce the amount of the loan by 20%. Awards are renewable for up to three additional years provided satisfactory academic progress.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $23,000.

Applications and additional information about the Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois are available online at the provided links. To be considered for membership as a Golden Apple Scholar, students must complete the online application form and the following documentation: two references who can complete the online reference forms; an official or unofficial copy of transcripts for all coursework completed; a copy of ACT and/or SAT scores or a test report; a list of honors, activities and awards; and an essay submission that responds to the topics and prompts listed on the application form. Students are encouraged to submit all applications by December 1 for priority consideration. The final deadline for application is March 1.
