Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, one award was given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a full-time student.
  4. Must pursue studies in motion pictures and television, with an emphasis on technology.
  5. Must be enrolled in an accredited high school; two- or four-year college/university; or graduate program at time of application.

Description: This award is available to U.S. students who are curently enrolled in an accredited high school or two- or four-year college or university and are members of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE). Students must plan to study motion pictures and television, with an emphasis in technology.

Additional Information: Please note: Students may apply for SMPTE membership at time of application if they are not already members. More information on joining SMPTE is available online . A student membership is $35 per year. Scholarship recipients will receive full conference registration to the annual SMPTE Technical Conference. They will be recognized at the honors and awards ceremony during the conference.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications are available on the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) website. To apply, the student must be a current member of the SMPTE. A student may join at time of application by visiting the membership section of the SMPTE website. Annual membership cost is $35. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: a current official transcript; a personal statement addressing his/her work experience and/or interests that are relevant to the application; a signed personal statement of his/her goals and objectives, explaining his/her reasons for pursuing his/her course of study in motion pictures and television; a personal statement of his/her proposed use of funds; and two letters of recommendation from responsible persons, citing the specific reasons why the recommender believes the applicant is deserving of the award. The letter of recommendation must be signed and dated, and must include the recommender's name, title, address, telephone number, and email address. One letter must be from a SMPTE student chapter advisor or a 'Governor' of SMPTE. Applicants who are not attending institutions where a student chapter is located may find a list of governors in their region in the monthly SMPTE Journal or online. All completed applications and supporting materials must be postmarked by the deadline date and sent to the address provided.
