Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a woman.
  4. Must be enrolled in, or accepted for enrollment, for the upcoming fall semester at time of application.
  5. Must be enrolled as a full- or part-time student in the upcoming fall semester to receive the scholarship.
  6. Must pursue a mortuary science program.
  7. Must attend a school accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE). A list of ABFSE-accredited schools is available online at www.abfse.org/html/dir-listing.html.

Description: This scholarship is open to U.S. female students who are enrolled in, or have been accepted to, an ABFSE-accredited mortuary science program. Students may enroll full or part time.

Additional Information: The scholarship was established in honor of Ralph Buckner, Jr.'s daughter, Shipley Rose Buckner, through a generous gift to the Funeral Service Foundation. Scholarships will be awarded without regard to race, religious beliefs, age, national origin, or disability. Students may receive only one scholarship from the FSF. Candidates will be notified of the scholarship decision in August.

Award Amount: The scholarship will be given either as one award of $5,000 or two awards of $2,500 each. Awards are non-renewable. Previous recipients may not reapply. Funding is sent directly to the school in the fall term; under no circumstances will the Funeral Service Foundation make a payment directly to the student. Funding may be used for tuition and fees, books, and supplies.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications are available on the Funeral Service Foundation (FSF) website and are accepted between February 15 and March 30, and between October 15 and November 30. In addition to the completed application, the applicant must submit: a copy of his/her acceptance letter to an American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE)-approved school or an official statement verifying his/her enrollment for the upcoming fall semester; and an original essay of 750 to 1,000 words in response to one of the four topic prompts provided on the application. Students must also submit two video responses to the required topics and may optionally choose to submit up to two more supporting videos. Applications must be submitted online by the deadline date.
