Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of scholarships provided may vary from year to year depending on the number of qualified applicants. Last year, three new scholarships were awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a high school senior or undergraduate student at the time of application.
  2. Must have a cancer diagnosis.
  3. Must major in or plan to major in music.
  4. This award is for U.S. students and international students studying in the U.S.

Description: The Dear Jack Scholarship is available for high school seniors and undergraduate students in the U.S. who have been diagnosed with cancer. Applicants must be majoring in music. Applications open Nov. 1 and close January 31 each year. Click here to learn more and apply today!

Application requirements for the Dear Jack Scholarship are:

  • Confirmation of cancer diagnosis
Additional Information: The Dear Jack Scholarship is provided annually by Cancer for College, and seeks to provide financial assistance to students in the U.S. who have been diagnosed with cancer. Applicants must be majoring in music and must demonstrate both high academic achievement and unmet financial need. Cancer for College has worked since 1993 to contribute inspiration, hope, and financial assistance to students studying in the U.S. who have been personally impacted by a diagnosis of cancer. All scholarship awards may be suspended up to one year for medically verifiable reasons. Students who do not enroll again within one year may also apply in future years, and will be given top consideration for selection of new award recipients.

Award Amount: The average scholarship provides $5,000 annually, but amounts may be reduced if the recipient has a lower amount of demonstrated financial need. Scholarships may be renewable for up to three additional years of undergraduate study.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $25,000.

Applications and additional information about the Dear Jack Scholarship are available online using the provided links. To be considered for an award, students must submit the following: a completed application; official transcripts for the last two years of academic work completed; a copy of tax returns from the prior year (or other proof of income if not available); a letter confirming the student's cancer diagnosis; two recommendation letters from individuals who are not related to the applicant; and information about the cost to attend one year of study at the applicant's current or intended college. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online by the deadline date.
