Number of Awards & Eligibility: Four awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be able to attend the JEN Conference on Jan. 9-12, 2019, in Reno, NV at his/her own expense if selected as a recipient.
  3. Must be 14 years of age or older.
  4. Must be enrolled in high school or college/university.
  5. Must display an exceptional talent and potential in jazz performance and/or education or industry.

Description: This scholarship is open to U.S. students who are 14 years of age or older that display an exceptional talent and potential in jazz performance and/or education or industry. Applicants must demonstrate potential for growth, artistic accomplishments, and leadership skills; university students must also demonstrate financial need.

Additional Information: The following named scholarships are available through this program: the David Baker Scholarship, for a university student who demonstrates talent, spirit, and commitment to the field of jazz studies; the Hal Leonard Collegiate Scholarship, for a deserving university student entering or continuing his/her collegiate jazz studies; the Mary Jo Papich JEN Co-Founder Women in Jazz Scholarship, for a woman in jazz at the university level; the Dr. Lou Fischer JEN Co-Founder Scholarship, for a high school student. Applicants must demonstrate potential for growth, artistic accomplishments, and leadership skills. University students should demonstrate financial need related to college tuition and/or school-related expenses. High school students should use the scholarship award as tuition to attend either a summer jazz camp or college tuition and/or school-related expenses. Recipients must participate in a jazz class or ensemble during the school year after the scholarship is granted. Scholarship recipients also must attend the JEN Conference. A complimentary conference pass will be given to the selected recipient as a conference volunteer; being a volunteer is a requirement to receive this award. Travel expense (if any) will be the responsibility of the recipient.

Award Amount: All scholarship awards are $1,000 annually, except for the David Baker Scholarship, which is $3,000 annually. All awards are non-renewable. Recipients also receive a one-year eJEN membership/certificate.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications are available online on the Jazz Education Network (JEN) website. The student must be nominated by a JEN member or be self-nominated to apply. The nominee must submit a narrative describing how he/she meets the eligibility criteria, up to five letters of support (including a letter from his/her jazz program/ensemble), and a short biography. Only one application is required to apply for all scholarships offered by JEN. The application and all support materials must be submitted by the deadline date.
