Number of Awards & Eligibility: Ten finalists will be selected, five from the New York City auditions and five from the Los Angeles auditions. One Top Award winner will be selected from the finalists.

Description: This vocal competition is open to U.S. and Canadian residents who are 21-35 years of age as of the time of application and who are operatic singers. Applicants must be prepared to attend auditions in New York City or Los Angeles at their own expense.

Additional Information: The purpose of the awards is to provide singers with financial assistance and the possibility of making a European audition tour with the goal of obtaining a long-term contract in an opera house. If a singer prefers not to travel to Europe, or has prior commitments, he/she is still eligible to enter this competition and compete for all cash awards. Applicants must be prepared to be present for all phases of the competition. Regional auditions will be held in New York City, New York, USA, and in Los Angeles, California, USA. The Grand Finals Concert, at which the Top Award winner will be announced, will be held in Los Angeles. Round-trip transportation and accomodations will be provided for the New York City winners to Los Angeles. The New York City regional auditions will be held on Feb. 26-March 2, 2018. The Los Angeles regional auditions will be held April 2nd to 4th, 2018. The Grand Finals Concert will take place on May 20, 2018, from 2:00-6:00 p.m. The concert will be held at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, 4401 W. 8th St., Los Angeles, CA 90005. Please note: Finalists are required to attend the coaching session and all rehearsals, and must remain at the Grand Finals Concert for the Award Presentation following the competition to be eligible for the awards. Any contestant who has been a recipient of any of the top five cash awards from the Loren L. Zachary Society National Vocal Competition is excluded from further participation in this or any future competition sponsored by the Society. Singers who are currently under contract in a European opera house, or singers who have had a long-term contract in a European opera house, are also not eligible to enter this competition.

Award Amount: The Top Award winner will receive $10,000 to $12,000, and the remaining finalists will receive approximately $50,000 distributed among them. Each finalist will receive a minimum of $1,000 to $1,500. Awards are given as cash. In prior years, prizes were awarded as follows: first place, $12,000; second place, $10,000; third place, $8,000; fourth place, $6,000; fifth place, $4,000; encouragement prize, $3,150; and four grants of $1,600 each.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,005.
