In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must attend a U.S. college or university.
  3. Must be a full- or part-time student.
  4. Must be currently enrolled. Students who have been accepted for future enrollment are NOT eligible.
  5. Must have an interest in songwriting.
  6. Must be between the ages of 17 and 24 as of the application deadline date.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This songwriting competition is open to current full- and part-time students at U.S. colleges who are 17 to 24 years of age as of the application deadline date. Students must submit an original song with lyrics and instrumentation in one of the following genres: Americana, blues, bluegrass, contemporary Christian, country, folk, and roots.

Additional Information: The Nashville Songwriting Scholarship is an annual competition established in 2015 to encourage and support aspiring country music songwriters nationwide. The award commemorates Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI)'s 75th Anniversary year and pays homage to musical epicenter and "Songwriting Capital of the World", Nashville, Tennessee. Applicants must warrant that they have not assigned any rights in the submitted work to a major music publisher or major record label. In any given year, songwriters who meet the eligibility criteria may apply to either the Nashville Songwriting Scholarship or John Lennon Scholarships Competition, but not both. The BMI Foundation shall have the right (but shall have no obligation) to license up to three public performances of a winning composition and, in the case of works of a popular nature, authorize appropriate musical arrangements to be made for such performances. The BMI Foundation shall also have the right to post a recording of any winning compositions on the bmi.com and bmifoundation.org websites and to authorize the reproduction and distribution on audio tape and/or CD of no more than 12 copies of each work. All other rights under the copyright law remain vested in the composer and lyricist.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, non-renewable. Should a jointly written work receive any type of award under this contest, the scholarship will be divided equally between applicants.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in November for a refreshed application deadline date. Applications are available on the BMI Foundation, Inc. website. To apply, the student must complete the online application and submit an original song with lyrics accompanied by whatever instrumentation is chosen by him/her. The song may be in any of the following genres: Americana, blues, bluegrass, contemporary Christian, country, folk, and roots. Both lyrics and music must be original and not based on any prior work. The entry must be submitted as a MP3 or MP4a file, which should be named only with the title of the song. One copy of the lyrics must also be submitted as a PDF. Neither of these items may indicate the name of the applicant or his/her school. Applicants may submit only one song to the competition. A jointly written work will be considered as a single entry; all applicants must meet eligibility requirements. Applications must be submitted online no later than the deadline date.
