Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have reached his/her 19th, but not 26th, birthday by March 1 of the year of auditions.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must have a strong interest in music, and have vocalist or instrumentalist skills.
  5. Must be legally blind with 20/200 or less vision after correction.

Description: This award is for legally blind U.S. students who have a strong interest in music, and have vocalist or instrumentalist skills. The student must have his/her 19th, but not 26th, birthday by March 1 of the year of auditions.

Application requirements for the NFMC Hinda Honigman Award for the Blind are:

  • Ophthalmologist affidavit
  • CD
Additional Information: Since its founding in 1898, the NFMC has grown into one of the world's largest music organizations with club and individual members of all ages. The NFMC is chartered by the Congress of the United States, and is the only music organization member of the United Nations.

Award Amount: $800 is awarded for further study at the undergraduate or graduate levels to the winner. $450 is awarded for further study to the runner-up. The awards are offered on an annual basis and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,600.

Applications are available on the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) website. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: an affidavit from an ophthalmologist stating that he/she is legally blind with 20/200 vision or less after correction; a copy of a recorded performance of an instrumental or vocal piece of his/her choosing on CD; and a copy of the composition(s) performed for the judges to reference.Application materials must be postmarked by the deadline date.
