Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a native-born or naturalized U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be 25 to 34 years of age.
  4. Must have a disability or be visually impaired.
  5. Must submit a recording of himself/herself performing vocal or instrumental solo classical pieces.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This music competition is open to U.S. citizens who are 25 to 34 years of age and are disabled or visually impaired. Applicants must submit a vocal or instrumental recording of solo classical pieces.

Application requirements for the NFMC Vivian Menees Nelson Award for the Disabled and Visually Impaired are:

  • Application form
  • $5 entry fee
  • Music recording
  • Affidavit
  • Recommendation letter
Additional Information: Each applicant must be a member of the National Federation of Music Clubs, either through senior organization membership or a senior individual membership. If not a member, the student may submit membership dues with the application.

Award Amount: $500 annually, non-renewable. Please note: In the event of financial shortfalls, advertised award amounts may be adjusted. Applicants would be notified of the award change.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $500.

Applications are available on the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) website by clicking on the 'Senior Division' link. In addition to a completed application, each student must submit the following materials: the $5 entry fee; a 15-minute CD recording of solo classical pieces (vocal or instrumental); a list of the compositions recorded; a letter of recommendation from his/her music teacher; and an affidavit from a medical doctor stating the nature of his/her disability. The application and entry fee must be mailed to the address provided and must be postmarked by the deadline date. CDs must be mailed by March 1.
