Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be pursuing a degree in music therapy OR be interning in music therapy.
  4. Must be a college junior, senior, graduate student or graduate student in an internship.
  5. Must be enrolled in a school accredited by the American Music Therapy Association.

Description: This award is available for currently enrolled U.S. college sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students. Students must be pursuing a degree in music therapy or interning for music therapy, and must attend a school accredited by the American Music Therapy Association.

Additional Information: This award is paid to the approved school of the recipient's choice. The student must have need for financial assistance to pursue this specialized education. All students should be able to use personal observation of use of music as therapy in treatment or rehabilitation of patients in hospitals or institutions employing a music therapist. The award must be used at an educational institution offering the music therapy degree or for a music therapy internship at an education or health facility. Students should possess well-rounded musical talent, skills, and training on his/her principal instrument as well as the piano and guitar. Students should also possess emotional stability, self-reliance, patience, tact, leadership, intelligence, good health, an ability to work with groups, and dedication to music therapy as a career. They should also be able to demonstrate growth in the effective application of music and music therapy techniques with client populations.

Award Amount: $500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $500.

Applications are available on the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) website by clicking on the 'Student Collegiate Division' link under the 'Competitions and Awards' section. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: three letters of recommendation referring to his/her qualifications (one each from the director of music therapy at his/her college/university, a music faculty member outside the music therapy department, and an acquaintance in the community); a personal statement referring to his/her qualifications; and a transcript of college credits and grade point average. If the student is not already a member of the NFMC, he/she must request membership as an individual student special member, and enclose $16 with the application for membership. Checks should be made payable to the National Federation of Music Clubs before March 1. The application and all supporting documents must be mailed to the national chairman at the address provided, and be received by the deadline date.
