In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be researching natural resource management, policy, or law, and be planning to conduct a research project on an aspect of the establishment, protection, or management of wilderness.
  3. Must be enrolled or planning to enroll in a graduate program.

Description: This scholarship is available for graduate students studying natural resource management, law or policy. The funds from the award are designed to support a research paper on a related topic, and selection of the award recipient will be based on the proposed research work described in his/her application.

Additional Information: Suggested research topics are available online at wilderness.org/content/gloria-barron-scholarship-guidelines. The research paper should address an aspect of the establishment, protection, or management of wilderness. The applicant may choose to discuss a subject relevant to current programs of The Wilderness Society. It may apply to a particular landscape or it may address issues broadly. Please note: Research proposals related to climate change are strongly encouraged. The scholarship may pay travel expenses for the recipient to work with staff members of The Wilderness Society on this project. The society wishes to encourage the publication of this work in an academic journal or other appropriate medium. The society has additional funds to help cover expenses of publishing and publicizing the final paper.

Award Amount: $10,000 annually, non-renewable. The scholarship is paid in two installments, the first in August for $7,000 and the second in February for the remaining $3,000. The recipients are required to submit a paper describing the findings of their research project within 24 months of receiving the award. In order to receive the second payment, the recipient must send a letter summarizing the status of his/her project and the expected completion date in January or February.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.

Details about the application process can be found at The Wilderness Society (TWS) website. Students apply by submitting the required materials through the online application portal. Each student must submit the following materials for his/her application to be considered complete: a two-page double-spaced cover letter that offers insights into his/her personal motivations as well as how wilderness has influenced his/her life; a three- to five-page double-spaced proposal of his/her research project that includes a description of his/her proposed work and a timeline for completion of a paper within 24 months (page limit does not include his/her list of references/citations); a current resume or curriculum vitae; two letters of recommendation describing his/her ability to meet the objectives of the scholarship and proposed work; and official or unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts. All application materials must be submitted online no later than 5 p.m. ET on the deadline date. Faxed or mailed applications are not acceptable.
