Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of recipients for this program varies according to the number of eligible students. In the 2012-2013 academic year, there were 20 awards given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Missouri.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  4. Must be one of the following types of eligible persons: a public safety officer permanently and totally disabled in the line of duty; a spouse of a public safety officer killed or permanently and totally disabled in the line of duty; OR a child (natural, adopted or stepchild) of a public safety officer or a Missouri Department of Transportation employee engaged in the construction or maintenance of the state's highways, roads, and bridges killed or permanently and totally disabled in the line of duty.
  5. Must plan to enroll full time (12 or more credit hours). Students with disabilities may be considered as full time when enrolled in six or more credit hours.
  6. Must not be pursuing a degree or certificate in theology or divinity.
  7. Must be a high school senior or current undergraduate student.
  8. Must plan to attend a participating Missouri institution. A list of participating institutions is available online at: dhe.mo.gov/ppc/grants/publicserviceofficer.php .

Description: This award is available to Missouri undergraduate students. This program provides tuition assistance to certain public employees and their families if the employee is killed or permanently and totally disabled in the line of duty.

Additional Information: Public safety officers include firefighters, police officers, capitol police officers, parole officers, probation officers, state correctional employees, water safety officers, conservation officers, park rangers, or highway patrolmen employed by Missouri or a political subdivision of the state. The MDHE will provide notice to students of eligibility. The institution determines final eligibility at the time the grant funds are requested each semester. Awards are provided based on funding availability with renewal students and students with the earliest application received dates having priority.

Award Amount: The maxium award is the lesser of the following: the cost of the actual tuition charged at the school in which the applicant is enrolled full-time (12 credit hours); or the amount of tuition charged for 12 credit hours to an undergraduate Missouri resident enrolled full-time in the same class level and in the same academic major at the Missouri public four-year, regional institutions. Grants may be renewed annually until a student has obtained a bachelor's degree, completed 150 semester credit hours, or received the award for 10 semesters, whichever occurs first. Awards are not available during summer terms.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,121.
