Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  3. Must be a resident of Vermont.
  4. Must be a graduate student who has already received a four-year undergraduate degree and is enrolled in graduate- or professional-level coursework.
  5. Must enroll on a three-quarter (nine credits) or higher basis.
  6. Must seek a degree in a health care field, including, but not limited to, dentistry, nursing, medicine, pharmacy, psychiatry, or psychology.
  7. Must demonstrate academic achievement with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Description: This award is open to Vermont graduate students who are seeking a degree in a health care field, including, but not limited to, dentistry, nursing, medicine, pharmacy, psychiatry, or psychology. Students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and demonstrate financial need.

Additional Information: Dr. Pauline McHugh established this scholarship to honor the support and encouragement her parents, Patrick and Judith McHugh, provided for her throughout her youth, especially while she pursued higher education. Applicants must attend an accredited school approved for federal Title IV funding, and must demonstrate financial need. Selection is based on financial need, application documents, and academic achievement. There are approximately 280 applicants for this award each year.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in October for a refreshed application deadline date. Applications are available from the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC) website. Applications may be completed either online or in paper form beginning on Jan. 1. Please note: The student is only required to submit one application for all scholarships for which he/she wishes to apply. In addition, if a particular document is required for more than one scholarship, the student need only submit one copy of that document. To apply, the student must complete and submit the VSAC Unified Scholarship Application and submit the following materials: a letter of recommendation; an essay; and official transcripts. NOTE: Required additional materials MUST conform to the detailed instructions in the VSAC Scholarships Booklet. The student is highly encouraged to review the booklet thoroughly when assembling materials. The student must also file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. Electronic applications and any digital versions of supplemental materials must be submitted by midnight on the deadline date. Paper applications or any supplemental materials in paper form must be postmarked by the deadline date.
