Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually and is dependent on funding.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must major in the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences. Marine biology does not meet this requirement.
  4. Must be a full-time student.
  5. Must be entering his/her freshman year of college in the upcoming fall semester.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: U.S. high school seniors who will be entering their first year of college in the upcoming fall semester are eligible for this award. Students must be enrolled full time in a major leading to a career in atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences (marine biology not acceptable).

Application requirements for the AMS Freshman Undergraduate Scholarship are:

Additional Information: The evaluation of applicants will be based on the applicant's performance in high school, including academic records, recommendation, scores from a national college exam, and a written essay. Selections will be made by the AMS Executive Committee based on recommendations from the AMS Committee of Judges for Undergraduate Awards. The AMS does not prepare written evaluations of either successful or unsuccessful candidates. The announcement of winners is expected to be made in May. Please note: Students who are eligible for both this award and the AMS Minority Scholarship may apply to both programs, but may only accept one.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, renewable for one additional year. The second-year funding is dependent on successful completion of the first year. AMS may terminate a scholarship when a student in no longer in good academic standing, when a student is no longer a full-time student, or when a student is no longer enrolled in a program preparing for a degree in the atmospheric and related oceanic or hydrologic sciences, as determined by AMS.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in October for a refreshed application deadline date. Applications are available online from the American Meteorological Society (AMS) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following materials: a recent official transcript showing courses and grades for the past three years and a copy of his/her SAT or ACT scores; one letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor supporting his/her application on school stationery, sealed in an envelope for confidentiality, and enclosed with the application; and a short essay (approximately 500 words) responding to the question on the application. The application must be mailed to the address provided and be postmarked by the deadline date. Supporting materials may arrive two weeks after this date.
