In order to apply for this scholarship, students must complete an environmental project. Students have three options for the project: trash cleanup; planting native trees; or a free-form project (possible projects include starting a recycling program, taking action to protect an area for wildlife, campaigning to save a species or natural area, educating others about wildlife or conservation issues, taking steps to prevent pollution/contamination, or improving awareness about the importance of renewable energy sources). Students must take high-resolution digital pictures of the project while in progress and at completion. (If the student does not have or cannot borrow a digital camera, the photo requirement will be waived.) After completing the project, the student must write an essay about the project. There is no word limit on the essay. Students may work in groups or individually on the project. The student must register on the Nicodemus Wilderness Project website in order to submit his/her pictures and essay. After registration, the student will be able to upload his/her best photograph and accompanying essay. If the student has problems registering, he/she should send the essay, attached photograph, the name of the area where his/her project was completed, his/her name, and age (and the names and ages of any other group members) to the email address listed. Additional information and tips on conducting projects are available on the Nicodemus Wilderness Project website. The application cycle for the initiative for this year runs from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31.
