Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or hold permanent resident status.
  3. Must be pursuing a degree at a U.S. institution.
  4. Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at the time of paper submission.
  5. Must have an interest in meteorology.

Description: This award is open to U.S. undergraduate students who submit an original paper concerned with some phase of the atmospheric sciences. Students must be pursuing a degree at a U.S. institution.

Additional Information: The Father James B. Macelwane Annual Award was established by the American Meteorological Society to honor the late Rev. James B. Macelwane, S.J., a world-renowned authority of seismology, who was a geophysicist and Dean of the Institute of Technology, Saint Louis University, until his death in 1956. No more than two students from any one institution may enter papers in any one contest. The evaluation of papers occurs during the summer. Announcement of the award recipient will be made in the fall. AMS encourages applications from women, minorities, and disabled students who are traditionally underrepresented in the atmospheric and related oceanic sciences.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable. The recipient will also be given partial travel support to the AMS Annual Meeting.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.
