Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a high school graduate or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.
  4. Must plan to study ecology or environmental studies.
  5. Must be a resident of New Jersey pursuing studies in New Jersey or elsewhere OR be a non-resident of New Jersey pursuing studies in New Jersey or its surrounding waters.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for students above the high school level wishing to pursue summer study in environmental issues. Applicants who are not New Jersey residents must study in New Jersey. Residents of New Jersey may apply to study anywhere in the United States.

Application requirements for the GCA Caroline Thorn Kissel Summer Environmental Studies Scholarship are:

Additional Information: Applicants who are not New Jersey residents must plan a project of study in New Jersey. Residents of New Jersey may apply to study anywhere in the United States. The scholarship committee will meet in March; applicants will be notified shortly after the committee meets. The Garden Club of America does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, disability, religion, age, national origin or sexual orientation with regard to the application for any of the club's scholarships.

Award Amount: $3,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

Applications are available on the Garden Club of America (GCA) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a short essay addressing the areas listed on the application; and two letters of reference from people in his/her field of interest. One letter should be from a professor or someone who can comment on his/her interest, achievement, personal qualities, and eligibility for the summer program he/she has selected. The second letter of reference should include information on the program itself and an evaluation of its worth. The completed application and all supporting materials must be received by the deadline date. Faxed or emailed applications will not be accepted.
