Number of Awards & Eligibility: Six awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be attending Lahainaluna High School in Lahaina, HI.
  3. Must be a resident of Hawaii.
  4. Must demonstrate academic achievement with a high grade point average in the sciences.
  5. Must plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university as a full-time student (12 credits per semester).
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Must have an interest in the sciences.
  8. Must be a high school senior at time of application.
  9. Must have a grade point average of 2.7 or higher.

Description: This scholarship is available for high school seniors who are attending Lahainaluna High School in Lahaina, HI. Students must demonstrate academic achievement with a high grade point average in the sciences.

Additional Information: This scholarship was established by Mary Josephine Bloder, a Science and Math teacher at Lahainaluna High School for 23 years. As a young woman, Mary Josephine Bloder had to move away from home to get an education. For many years she lived on the Lahainaluna High School campus, where she developed close relationships with many of the school's boarding students. This fund seeks to help Lahainaluna boarders who are good science students attend college. Scholarship is renewable for 4 years. Preference will be given to students who are boarded (or live on campus) at Lahainaluna High School. All applicants must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.

Award Amount: Approximately $2,083 annually, renewable for up to four years.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $12,498.

Applications and additional information about this scholarship can be found online using the provided link. In addition to the online application form, the student must submit the following supporting materials: the printed confirmation page that is generated after applying online; a typed, double-spaced personal statement of two to three pages answering the questions listed online; an official copy of his/her most recent transcript; and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. Two letters of recommendation must also be submitted for this scholarship. These letters should be written by a teacher, counselor, minister, and/or employer who can comment on the applicant's overall character, achievement, and promise. One must be from a science teacher at Lahainaluna High School. The letters must be current (dated after April 1), contain the applicant's full name, and be signed by the recommender. A student will not be able to submit his/her application until all required supporting documents are electronically attached to the application. Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. HST on the deadline date.
