Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. One Frank DeBenedetti Memorial Scholarship, one Edie Schmidt NMA Memorial Scholarship, one Al Piccetti NMA Memorial Scholarship, one Lou Gast NMA Memorial Scholarship, and one or more NMA Undergraduate Scholarships will be awarded. Ten awards were given last year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 2.75 or higher at time of application. The recipient must maintain a grade point average of 2.75 or higher and remain in good academic standing during the term of the scholarship.
  3. Must be enrolled in 12 units or more per semester.
  4. Must be enrolled in a curriculum leading to a bachelor's of science degree in animal science, meat science, food science or a related discipline at an accredited four-year college or university. The applicant should be considering a career in the meat industry.
  5. Must be a college sophomore, junior, or senior who is enrolled in an approved program at the time the scholarship becomes effective. Freshmen students may apply but must be sophomores at the time the scholarship becomes effective; senior students must enroll as undergraduates for two consecutive semesters (or equivalent ) beyond the effective date (Sept.1) of the scholarship.

Additional Information: Scholarship awards are based on scholastic achievement, work experience, career goals, and other activities. Financial need, age, gender, or national origin are not conditions of eligibility for any of the awards. Freshmen who apply must be sophomores at the time the scholarship becomes effective. Senior students must enroll as undergraduates for two consecutive semesters (or equivalent ) beyond the effective date of the scholarship. Applicants who receive an award must remain enrolled in the approved major and university during the term of the scholarship. Awardees who withdraw from school or transfer to another major during the term of the scholarship must return the unused balance of the award to the NMA Scholarship Foundation.

Award Amount: The Frank DeBenedetti and Robert Hatoff Memorial Scholarships provider $2,500. All other scholarships are for $2,250. Each scholarship recipient who attends the National Meat Association Annual Convention will receive a $500 travel award and plaque. All awards are offered annually and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,333.

The applicant may obtain an application from his/her department head, a faculty member, or from the National Meat Association (NMA) Scholars website. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also submit the following: a typed 300- to 350-word essay addressing the topic listed on the application; a summary of work experience; a list of awards and honors received, and extracurricular activities; a faculty letter of recommendation; an official transcript; and a list of completed, current, and pending courses. All application materials must be received by the deadline.
