Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately nine awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university as a full-time student (12 credits per semester for undergraduate; 9 credits per semester for graduate).
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  4. Must be a resident of Hawaii.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must major in math, physics, or science and technology.
  7. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.

Description: This scholarship is available for Hawaii undergraduate and graduate students who are majoring in math, physics, or science and technology. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: The Shuichi, Katsu, and Itsuyo Suga scholarship fund was established in 1997 by Yasuo Suga in honor of his mother, father and stepmother. The Suga scholarship provides financial support for Hawaii residents majoring in mathematics, physics, science or technology fields. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $9,000.

Online application forms are available on the Hawai'i Community Foundation website. The student should visit the provider's website for detailed instructions on how to complete the online application. In addition to the online application form, the student must submit the following supporting materials: the printed confirmation page that is generated after applying online; a typed, double-spaced personal statement of two to three pages answering the questions listed online; an official copy of his/her most recent transcript; and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The application must be submitted by 4 p.m. HST on the deadline date. Note: Students WILL NOT be able to submit their application until all required supporting documents are electronically attached to the application.
