Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must have a grade point average of 2.8 or higher.
  2. Must be majoring in engineering management.
  3. Must plan to pursue a career in the welding or metal-cutting industries.
  4. Must be a high school senior at the time of application.
  5. This award is for U.S. and international students.

Description: This scholarship is available for college seniors and current graduate students who are majoring in management within the metalworking, welding, and engineering field. Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.8 or higher.

Additional Information: The Barbara and Richard Couch Hypertherm Scholarship is awarded each year to a student in the final year of high school. Applicants must have completed a Bachelor of Science degree or be in the final year of such undergraduate studies, and he/she must also already be accepted for graduate work in engineering management at an accredited graduate school. Financial need is not required; however, priority consideration will be given to those demonstrating unmet financial need. Applicants may be a citizen of any country and plan to attend any accredited graduate program located in any country.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available online on the American Welding Society (AWS) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must also submit the following: two letters of reference with one letter of reference indicating previous hands-on welding experience; a personal statement; original official transcript(s) sent directly from the college or university (if applying for more than one scholarship, only one transcript must be an original official transcript); verification of enrollment; an essay as specified on the application; and a statement of unmet financial need. Students must also file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by the deadline date. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The application and all supporting materials must be submitted to the address provided, and be received by the deadline date.
