Description: This writing contest is open to amatuer writers in the United States who submit a previously unpublished work of short fiction. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older at the time of submission.

Additional Information: Initiated in 2007, BOA's American Reader Series has published more than 20 short story collections. These collections feature voices more concerned with the artfulness of their writing than the twists and turns of plot. In 2018, the eigth BOA Short Fiction Prize will be awarded to a collection of short stories. As with BOA Edition's poetry, the first criterion for publishing any book will be its artistic excellence.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

This is a short fiction contest. Entry forms are availabe on the BOA Editions, Limited website. Contest entries will only be accepted between April 1 and May 31 and must be postmarked or submitted online sometime between these two dates. To enter, the applicant must submit a fiction manuscript between 90 and 200 pages in length. Entries must be typed or word processed in a minimum of 11-point font on one side of standard white paper, 1.5 or double spaced. The author's name, address, and telephone number must appear on the title or cover page of the manuscript. The entry must be paginated consecutively, have a table of contents, include any publications acknowledgements, and be bound only with a spring clip (no paperclips). Submissions should be mailed via USPS to the address provided or submitted online. Any manuscripts submitted via FedEx, UPS, email, and/or by fax will not be accepted. An entry fee of $25 must accompany each submission. Checks or money orders should be made payable to BOA Editions. Credit card payments are only accepted for online entries. Contestants may submit more than one manuscript, but a separate entry fee and entry form must accompany each manuscript. Submissions will not be returned.
